Skoltech Space PhD Student Wins an Award to Present At the 66th International Astronautical Congress

SGC2015-Day1-Morning-Competition-1Ignasi Lluch i Cruz, PhD student from the space track at Skoltech, won an award for his research project entitled, Solving the Communications Bottleneck: A Federated Approach For Earth Observation Missions, presented at the 66th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) and Space Generation Congress (SGC) in Israel.

The contest he won is called Innovative Earth Observation Missions (OHB), which main purpose is to seek ideas on new and advanced missions, systems, concepts, and applications for Earth observation from space. Ignasi presented a novel approach to widen the communications bottleneck based upon Federated Satellite Systems (FSS).

He pointed out in his paper that some challenges to design new missions to operate in such an open, interconnected context are addressed through a dedicated design framework that takes into account local and global value delivery. For that reason, he presented a framework that captures the key elements to understand the design trades for missions in Earth Observation Systems Federation (EOS-F), relaying on tradespace exploration concepts and System of Systems theory.

In addition, one of the challenges for the future of Earth Observation (EO) is how to downlink the large amounts of data generated by contemporary high-resolution instruments, and how to enable their intensive use. A federated solution based upon inter-mission cooperation, reliefs this problem via supplying processing power and downlink bandwidth to missions in need. His paper presented a vision for the realization of a federation among EO missions, designated as the EOS-F.
