Russian scientists have reported on molecules that may help in the treatment of prostate cancer

Researchers from Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), Moscow State University (MSU) and National University of Science and Technology (MISIS) have published a review in the Journal of Drug Targeting. They reported about the most promising compounds for prostate cancer treatment and diagnosis.

Scientists have identified 11 compounds. All of them are small-molecules called low-weight ligands, which can interact with a Prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men. Prostate specific membrane antigen is a very promising target in fighting with this illness, because cancer cells contain 10 times bigger amount of this antigen than healthy prostate cells. Due to this fact it helps to recognize cancer cells and affect just them. Such antigens are called tumor markers. Compounds described in the paper are capable to bind these markers selectively. In their work researchers also described advantages of these 11 molecules in comparison with other already existed. These compounds are easy to synthesize and they demonstrate good pharmacokinetic parameters. All these substances have demonstrated the necessary qualities at the stage of preclinical studies on animals and currently undergoing clinical trials, success in which will allowed to use them for the prostate cancer treatment.
