Skoltech’s new Computational Materials Design Lab opened on Friday, September 6. The project, which is part of a collaboration with Gazprom Neft Science & Technology Center, aims to further develop Skoltech’s role in computational materials design, which is already a revolutionary field of science.

Under the directorship of Professor Artem Oganov (Skoltech) and Professor Vladimir Anisimov (IMP UB RAS), researchers at the new laboratory will work on methods for predicting the properties of magnetic materials, thermoelectric materials, and superconducting materials, which are in demand in areas such as transport, energy, and drilling.

The laboratory opening took place in the framework of the Computational Materials Program of Excellence – Inaugural Symposium and Computational Materials Discovery School, which took place from September 3-8 and drew 30 world-renowned experts in the field of computational materials from across the globe.

“Ten years ago, Russia was not particularly strong in this field, but now things have completely changed. We are very well represented at Skoltech in terms of our research as well as the quality of work presented by our young people here.” – Artem Oganov, Full Professor (Center for Energy Science and Technology)
