Skoltech showed off a functional 5G base station prototype at the “Strong Ideas for the New Time” Forum

On November 11-13, Skoltech took part in the “Strong Ideas for the New Time” Forum staged by the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI) and the Roscongress Foundation, where it presented a functional prototype of the 5G base station that boasts bit rates of about 300 to 450 Mbps in a real operator network.  The base station was first showcased on October 20, 2020 at the inauguration of the MTS-Skoltech pilot zone at the Skolkovo Innovation Center, which is thus far Russia’s only pilot zone with an operator network based on a purely Russian 5G solution.

The invitation to exhibit its 5G base station prototype at the Forum is a testament to Skoltech’s well-recognized reputation as a Russian developer of network solutions for the fifth generation and beyond.

“The attention given by the participants of this high-profile Forum to our base station built around Russian software and hardware proves that we are on the right track towards developing cutting-edge telecom solutions for the Russian economy. Our partners, Eltex and Radio-Gigabit, and we are confident that our solution will be ready for scaling up to national level by 2023. Currently, our base station supports the key Russian and international 5G frequency bands, 3.5 GHz and 4.9 GHz. If other bands become available in Russia, we will make sure they are supported too. We aim for meeting Russian telecom operators’ demand for a locally-designed robust 5G network solution. The 450 Mbps bit rate demonstrated by our prototype on October 20 is only the beginning: industrial base stations for real operator networks will have bit rates three to four times higher than that. Attaining record-high bit rates in theoretical or lab research is not of concern for us. We focus instead on ensuring compatibility of all network hardware elements and testing our design solutions. We are greatly supported in this endeavor by our partner and Russia’s leading telecom operator, MTS,” says Dmitry Lakontsev, Director of the NTI Center of Excellence in Wireless Technology and the Internet of Things.

Supported by the Moscow government, VTB and VEB.RF, the Forum was attended by high-level public authorities, including governors and prime ministers of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, heads of ministries, agencies and development institutions, as well as Russian and international businesses, mass media, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations. The Forum was concluded on November 13 by an online Plenary session with President Vladimir Putin in attendance.
