Skoltech is an international graduate research-focused university that was founded by the group of world-renowned scientists in 2011. Skoltech's curriculum focuses on technology and innovation, offering Master's programs in 11 technological disciplines. Students receive rigorous theoretical and practical training, design their own research projects, participate in internships and gain entrepreneurial skills in English. The faculty is comprised of current researchers with international accreditation and achievements.

Molecular biology and beyond

The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center launch a series of lectures.

We first learned about DNA, the key molecule of life, almost 70 years ago when James D. Watson and Francis H.C. Crick published their famous paper in Nature. Today, DNA and RNA replication, transcription and translation appear in every school textbook on biology. Studying and understanding gene-level processes and chemical reactions helps biologists to comprehend the functioning and evolution of various organisms, find new antibiotics and treat oncological diseases. What methods do biologists use? How can the knowledge of viruses’ evolution help combat current and future pandemics? Will the study of mutations help develop new antitumor therapies and vaccines? Will molecular biology transform our future?

The lectures by Skoltech professors and researchers will address various aspects of molecular biology from basic concepts to groundbreaking discoveries of recent years.

Speakers:

  • Professor Mikhail Gelfand, Doctor of Science (Biology), a bioinformatician and Skoltech vice-president for biomedical research
  • Georgii Bazykin, Doctor of Science (Biology), an evolutionary virologist and professor at Skoltech
  • Ilya Osterman, Doctor of Science (Chemistry), principal researcher at Skoltech
  • Dmitry Ivankov, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, assistant professor at Skoltech
  • Vera Rybko, PhD in Biology (Oncology), deputy director for development at Skoltech’s Center for Molecular and Cellular Biology

The lectures will be held once a month from January to May. The series will start with a lecture by Mikhail Gelfand on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 17:00.

Address: Yekaterinburg, Yeltsin Center, Boris Yeltsin st., 3, Atrium.
