Skoltech is an international graduate research-focused university that was founded by the group of world-renowned scientists in 2011. Skoltech's curriculum focuses on technology and innovation, offering Master's programs in 11 technological disciplines. Students receive rigorous theoretical and practical training, design their own research projects, participate in internships and gain entrepreneurial skills in English. The faculty is comprised of current researchers with international accreditation and achievements.

Skoltech and Skolkovo connect drones to 5G network

Recent test flights in the urban air mobility zone involved a drone that carried a 5G data transmission and reception system which in the future will be part of the 5G-based digital airspace for drones.

The tests included transmission of video and drone payload data streams over the 5G mobile network, with the drone’s coordinates tracked using the network data. Besides that, the topological and altitude characteristics of the airspace with continuous 5G connectivity were recorded. The resulting multialtitude network coverage map will be a useful aid for further research.

The tests confirmed that using 5G networks to support drones and the digital airspace opens up vast prospects for the development of domestic innovative products.

Alexander Sivolobov, the deputy head of Skoltech Wireless, commented: “The important thing is that, for the first time in Russia, we measured the altitude and topology of 5G coverage, which is extremely important for creating a digital 3D airspace for drones. We believe that a high-quality 5G coverage map that accounts for altitudes and building heights is a must-have for creating an efficient transport system for drones in the urban and rural airspace. In addition to establishing the core for digital transport corridors for drones, the 5G network provides a wealth of useful supplementary services, such as tracking drones by the network, assigning priorities to drones for transmission of network traffic for control purposes, and simultaneously supporting thousands of drones. We are convinced that drones and other air vehicles will be heavy users of multiaccess edge computing (MEC) integrated with the 5G infrastructure. By the way, this very combination — 5G and MEC — is something we’re also testing in our network.”

The 5G pilot zone in Skolkovo deployed in 2020 by Skoltech and the Skolkovo Foundation with the support of a Russian mobile operator has been used by over 100 partners from a variety of industries to study promising use cases for 5G in the development of breakthrough solutions.
