Skoltech is an international graduate research-focused university that was founded by the group of world-renowned scientists in 2011. Skoltech's curriculum focuses on technology and innovation, offering Master's programs in 11 technological disciplines. Students receive rigorous theoretical and practical training, design their own research projects, participate in internships and gain entrepreneurial skills in English. The faculty is comprised of current researchers with international accreditation and achievements.

Key facts

#1 Skoltech was established on October 25, 2011 in cooperation of nine Russian universities and organizations. On October 26, 2011, the Skolkovo Foundation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) signed a partnership agreement on Skoltech development. In August 2012, the first 20 students were admitted to Skoltech and went to MIT for internship.

#2 Skoltech’s first startup, WICRON (robotics), was established in 2013. Another company, AstroDigital, established in 2014, specializes in data acquisition from remote space-borne sensors (Vice President – Ekaterina Kotenko-Lengold, Skoltech first cohort graduate) By fall of 2017, the startup raised upwards of 16 million dollars. Skoltech established 49 startups, 31 of which are Skolkovo residents.

#3 In June 2015, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev presented diplomas to Skoltech’s first graduating class. Skoltech’s 2018 graduates included 176 masters and PhD students, 87% of which work or study in Russia and the rest continue their studies at leading international universities. This year, 217 students graduated from Skoltech with a master’s degree (June 2019). In 2020, the total number of graduates will reach 1,000.

#4 Skoltech was honored with the Rising Star of Citation Impact award at the Web of Science 2017 ceremony for the fastest growth in the number of publications and citations among Russian institutes in 2017. Currently, Skoltech’s publication activity is on a par with the world’s three best young universities: publications/faculty in Nature journals (2018) – 0.5 (HKUST – 0.3, Nanyang – 0.3, KAIST – 0.5.) Skoltech faculty and researchers co-authored 2,273 publications in cooperation with over 900 universities and research centers worldwide (2013-2019.06.01.)

#5 On September 1, 2018, Skoltech inaugurated its brand-new Eastern Ring campus. Designed by HERZOG & DE MEURON, the new four-level campus building has a total area of 136,000 square meters and a circumference length of 880 m.

#6 As of the end of 2018, the funding on grants and R&D contracts exceeded 1 billion rubles and is expected to reach 1.5 billion by the end of 2019. Skoltech operates 5 joint labs with Russian and international technology leaders – Sberbank, Gazprom Neft, Huawei, Oerlikon, and Topcon.

#7 Currently, 136 professors, 143 postdocs and researchers, 202 engineers and technicians and over 1,000 students are working at Skoltech’s state-of-the-art labs. 7 labs with a total area of 3,300 square meters have been grouped into shared facilities. Digital agrolab was opened in September 2019.

#8 In September 2019, 287 newcoming MSc students from over 20 countries joined the Skoltech community and immersed themselves in innovative atmosphere of the unique month-long educational event, Innovation Workshop, that guides students through all the steps of innovative entrepreneurship from idea generation and evaluation, concept development and prototyping to feedback from potential customers and product development and launch. Today the Skoltech community amounts to over 2,600 people.
