Life Changing and Life Saving: Innovation Program Selects 7 Research Projects

Developing groundbreaking Hepatitis-C treatments. MRI scanners in which electromagnetic waves interact with biological tissues. Saving babies’ lives with contactless heart rate sensors. When it comes to scientific challenges, they usually do not come much bigger than that. Yet this list of ambitious research projects details only a few of the seven proof-of-concept proposals that won Skoltech’s Translational Research and Innovation Program for 2015/16 (see full winners’ list below).

This year, for the first time, the program was open exclusively to Skoltech faculty and researchers. A total of thirteen applications was submitted including projects in energy systems, new materials, social network tools, video conferencing, smart systems, healthcare and biomed.

“We witnessed a very inspiring competition between people and ideas”, said Dmitry Peblak, a manager with the Program, “many projects feature some promising technologies that could help Skoltech have a real impact both in Russia and globally. It was a challenge, but eventually we had to choose.”

The selection process consisted of several stages and spanned four months. One of its highlights was the 6th conference of the Program held on May 20 in Moscow. Russian and foreign experts, entrepreneurs, investors, scientists, as well as Skoltech and Skolkovo Foundation staff evaluated the projects on criteria such as research data, technological and market risks, IP opportunities, the project team, and established connections with potential customers.

The seven winning teams will receive financial support for their proof of concept studies. They will also benefit from trainings and mentorship provided by the university’s Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO). The 5th Skoltech Innovation Program Conference will take place Oct. 08-09

The Skoltech Innovation Program (SIP) was launched in 2012 by Skoltech’s CEI and developed in collaboration with the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The program helps research teams advance their scientific projects towards commercialization. It provides support with technological development, marketing and intellectual property management.

The fifth biannual SIP conference will bring together six research teams – all program participants – and their mentors (catalysts), as well as Russian and international experts in the field of technological innovation. The attendees will discuss progress achieved by the research teams for the last four months and their plans for further development.

The get-together will kick off Tuesday, October 08, with a Program overview and team work sessions. These will focus on target market identification, development of an existing or new product/technology, intellectual property management and commercialization strategies.

On the next day, October 09, research teams will report on the progress achieved so far. SIP Experts will provide professional recommendations for future strategic and technological improvement.

Professor Kelvin Willoughby of the Skoltech Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, will deliver a presentation on “Intellectual Property Management and Technological Innovation: What Can International Experience Teach Us?”  Dr. Alexey Kosik, one of the SIP’s seasoned catalysts, will lead a master class on creating a fast lane for an invention from lab to the market.
In addition to supporting the research projects, the conference also aims to build a vibrant innovation community within the Program in order to make it more efficient and beneficial for its participants. This community is growing fast, as new catalysts and experts express their interest in sharing experience and helping the selected teams to succeed.

On June 3rd half a dozen teams will present their progress so far and hear expert advice on the way forward. Should these young researchers change course or push ahead in the current direction?

The 4th Innovation Program Conference is due to coincide with the Startup Village events, and take place on June 3, from 10:00 to 17:30, inside the Skoltech tent.

Research teams will present their projects and receive feedback on their progress since last autumn, when they were awarded a year of funding by the Skoltech Innovation Program (SIP). Projects will be assessed by their potential to translate research into market and to drive innovation and entrepreneurship in Russia.

While each project is unique in its focus, all projects share a general mission of using proven scientific findings to create practical real-world applications.

Participation in the conference is open to anyone sharing the center’s enthusiasm for early stage innovative projects and a willingness to support them. The Program aims to develop a common methodology and a series of novel approaches to organizing research and development in universities and research institutes. This year’s gathering is organized with support from the Skolkovo Foundation and API Moscow, Moscow Innovation Development Center.

ABOUT the SIP

The SIP provides critical support for participating teams. We help establish proof of concept and assist advancing technology towards commercialization, including pre-start up identification of high potential market opportunities, intellectual property management, and, if appropriate, team development. The Program helps reduce two major types of risk – technical and marketing, ensuring that the invention meets the market’s tech requirements and finds its niche. Thus, SIP promotes applied research and motivates research teams to take risk and be entrepreneurial.

The Program is developed in collaboration with the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Deshpande Center and MIT have an unparalleled track record of success in tech commercialization. Projects are selected in

the following areas: IT, Energy, Biomedicine, Space, and Peaceful Nuclear Technologies. Successful outcomes for each participating research team will be licensing its technology to industry. Skoltech provides support and assistance to the participants until they reach this result.
