Irish Minister John Halligan, Minister of State for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development, visited Skoltech on Wednesday, August 21, as part of an Irish delegation to Russia. Deputy Head of Mission of the Irish Embassy, Frank Power, was also a part of the group. During the visit, Minister Halligan met with Dmitry Katalevsky, Director for Industrial Programs Department, and Lawrence Stein, Vice President for International Affairs and Development.
The meeting follows one that took place last March, when Ambassador Adrian McDaid and other Irish representatives came to discuss the continued partnership between Skoltech, Tatarstan, and Irish Companies on the development of a livestock genetics database.
Lawrence Stein presented on the history and purpose of Skoltech, and what differentiates it from other universities. Mr. Katalevsky went into some detail about the Skoltech-Ireland-Tatarstan cattle breeding project and the positive implications it could have for Russia’s agricultural sector and future business relations with Ireland. He stressed the uniqueness of this collaboration resulting in a real technology transfer in animal genomic assessment with the help of the Irish partners – Sustainable Food Systems Ireland, ICBF and Teagasc.
Minister Halligan for his part highlighted the importance for Irish companies to be key players in this project with Skoltech and Tatarstan, as the future of Irish agricultural exports faces certain challenges.
