Skoltech to Launch New Book The Forefront of Physics at the Palace Square during the Saint Petersburg International Book Fair 2021

As part of the 16th Saint Petersburg International Book Fair, a presentation of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) book The Forefront of Physics will take place on Thursday, May 27.

Saint Petersburg’s main book fair will be held for the first time on the Palace Square and in the General Staff Building of the State Hermitage Museum.

Professors Ildar Gabitov of Skoltech and the University of Arizona (USA) and Tatiana Podladchikova, Assistant Professor at Skoltech, winner of the Alexander Chizhevsky Medal for Space Weather and Space Climate, and expert in solar physics and space weather, will  will present the book «The Forefront of Physics» by Skoltech.

The presentation will feature two pop-science lectures. In his lecture “Turn on the Light” Professor Gabitov will consider new approaches to the application of light technologies across numerous areas, from biomedicine to heavy machinery. Professor Gabitov will explain how the rise of light-based technologies has spurred explosive growth in photonics and optoelectronics and what are the current trends, problems, and directions for developing large-scale integrated hybrid optoelectronics.

Tatiana Podladchikova will shed light on how energy from the Sun is transferred to the Earth, how our planet reacts to being in the Sun’s grasp, what causes sunspots and solar flares, in which direction the solar wind blows, how massive clouds of hot plasma gas surrounding the Sun can affect us, and why solar storms and polar lights occur. The lecture will also consider answers to the solar physical questions the 21st century may bring.

After the presentation, the audience will have a chance to talk to the professors at the Q&A session. The person who asks the most interesting question will be receive a copy of «The Forefront of Physics» autographed by the researchers featured in the book.

The presentation of «The Forefront of Physics» will begin at 6:30 p.m. (Beige Hall of the General Staff Building), admission is free. You can buy a copy of the book at the Paulsen publishing house stand on the Palace Square.

Information

«The Forefront of Physics» is an international scientific and educational media project from Skoltech, the Ogoniok magazine, and the newspaper Troitsky Variant – Nauka. In 2016–2017, the award-winning project ‘Mathematical Walks’ was developed. To summarize the project, a book ‘Mathematical Walks. A Collection of Interviews’ was published in Russian and English. The book won the Enlightener Prize in the Non-Format category in 2017.  The publication was prepared in partnership with the Kharkevich Institute for Information Transmission Problems (IITP RAS).

Now, the two books have constituted a two-volume publication Mathematics and Physics: Two Perspectives, One World.  Both books were released by Paulsen.
