October 27, 2025

Lev Ladanov from the Energy Systems MSc program won 1st place in the “Renewable Energy of the Planet” competition organized by the Association for Renewable Energy Development. As part of the competition, participants were tasked with developing an investment case titled “Creating the Energy Storage Systems Market in Russia.”

The assignment included a comprehensive market analysis, preparation of a project summary, development of an operating and financial model, and formulation of an implementation roadmap for the development of energy storage systems (ESS).

The project analyzed the potential for deploying ESS across multiple energy market segments:

— within power plants (hybrid solutions with renewables and thermal generation);

— as system-level storage for the wholesale electricity market;

— within the power grid infrastructure;

— and on the consumer side (“behind the meter”).

The proposed solution involves creating a portfolio of investment projects aimed at building the national energy storage infrastructure, developing mechanisms for ESS participation in wholesale and retail markets, and deploying hybrid power plants and distributed storage systems.

The project contributes to the technological advancement of the Russian energy sector, enhancing system flexibility, reliability, and the integration of renewable energy sources.
