On February 3, Associate Professor Stanislav Fedotov from the Skoltech Energy Center presented sodium-ion battery technology at a meeting on major scientific and technological projects in the Krasnoyarsk Region. The event was attended by VEB.RF Chairman Igor Shuvalov, Director General of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives Svetlana Chupsheva, and Mikhail Kotyukov, the regional governor.
Stanislav Fedotov spoke about his research group’s project, which is supported by a major grant from the Russian Science Foundation in memory of the outstanding Russian scientist Evgeny Velikhov, and shared the results of its initial stages. The scientists received funding to develop a manufacturing technology for sodium-ion batteries with specified performance characteristics for an industrial client in the Krasnoyarsk Region.
The Skoltech project aims to create an advanced manufacturing technology for the key components of sodium-ion batteries. The goal is to develop methods for producing cathodes, anodes, and electrolytes, as well as to assemble battery cells with high energy capacity (from 15 Wh) and specific energy density (from 130 Wh/kg). The work involves identifying optimal materials, scaling up their synthesis to industrial levels (at least 500 kg per year), assembling prototype samples, and testing them in accordance with the client’s requirements.
Together with an industrial client and partners, the Skoltech research group led by Stanislav Fedotov is establishing a laboratory for electrochemical materials science within the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. New generations of students and young scientists will be able to participate in developing future technologies and gain unique experience at the intersection of fundamental science and industrial applications.
The meeting was part of a business mission organized by VEB.RF and the Agency for Strategic Initiatives — a series of trips across Russian regions aimed at identifying new drivers of economic growth, developing urban infrastructure, and selecting promising projects. Representatives of development institutions, together with local authorities and businesses, are working on support measures designed to improve quality of life and stimulate entrepreneurship.
