Skoltech presents advanced developments at the Federation Council
June 3, 2026

Skoltech (part of the VEB.RF Group) showcased the Institute’s solutions at a technological leadership exhibition featuring developments from companies that have received support from development institutions of the VEB.RF Group. Skoltech President and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yulia Gorbunova, together with the team, presented the exhibits to Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matvienko and VEB.RF Head and Skoltech Board of Trustees Chairman Igor Shuvalov prior to the plenary session of the upper house of the Federal Assembly.

At the exhibition, the institute presented a number of promising developments:

  • A project to create technology for producing sodium‑ion batteries with tailored characteristics. These new‑type energy storage devices, based on Skoltech’s unique technologies, will be safe, import‑independent, and low‑cost. Their main advantage is the ability to operate in temperatures as low as −60°C, which is critically important for use in the Far North, Siberia, and the Arctic.

  • Microfluidic solutions from the company Labadvance, which are used in the oil and gas industry, medicine, biology, and small‑scale synthesis.

  • Prototypes of an osseointegrated myoelectric‑controlled prosthetic arm and a sensory feedback system for prostheses. These developments demonstrate how modern neurotechnologies can restore sensory feedback and create more natural human‑machine interaction.

  • An AI‑based platform for fire forecasting. The system analyzes natural processes at various levels — from tracking forest fires and ice conditions to assessing infrastructure and environmental threats. The platform has already been integrated into the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

Valentina Matvienko stated that she highly appreciated the exhibition and the Institute’s exhibits: “We have such amazing people, such brilliant minds. We can truly become technological leaders: both Skoltech — young guys, already so many developments — and other enterprises. And most importantly, this is already almost 100% sovereign products made from domestic components…”

During the Federation Council session, Igor Shuvalov delivered a report on “The Role of VEB.RF and Development Institutions in Achieving Technological Leadership of the Russian Federation,” in which he called Skoltech one of the best technological universities. Shuvalov spoke about the ongoing work to launch a bachelor’s program at the institute and the plans of Skoltech’s new President Yulia Gorbunova: “Today we are discussing the possibility of launching a bachelor’s program either as a separate program or jointly with leading universities. Recently, under the direction of the Presidential Administration, we conducted a selection process for a new rector. The previous rector, Academician Alexander Petrovich Kuleshov, did a tremendous amount of work in establishing the institute. […] Academician Yulia Germanovna Gorbunova, an outstanding chemist, if I may say so, has now taken over Skoltech and has a certain development plan for this university, including ensuring that patents emerge that we can replicate within our credit product.”

Igor Shuvalov also emphasized that the development institution considers the partnership between Skoltech, MIPT, the Skolkovo Foundation, and VEB.RF to be the foundation for creating first‑class technologies and business projects.

“It is important for us to present our technological achievements within the VEB Group at the Federation Council platform to show how science and the real economy can work in a single chain. We see our mission within the Group as the core of scientific and technological initiatives. Skoltech takes on the role of a generator of cutting‑edge ideas and solutions that can then be scaled using VEB.RF’s development tools. In close coordination with the Group, we plan to make a significant contribution to training high‑tech personnel and to develop new projects aimed at ensuring technological leadership and integrating breakthrough developments into the economy,” said Skoltech President and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yulia Gorbunova.
