Dr. Denis Orlov is a scientist and educator specializing in AI-assisted multiscale petrophysics, digital rock physics, and data-driven optimization of hydrocarbon recovery. With over 20 years of research experience, he combines expertise in physics, porous media mechanics, and AI to advance the characterization and development of complex reservoirs.

He began his career at Lomonosov Moscow State University, earning a Master’s in Physics (2007) and a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics (2010), with early work in high‑velocity hydrodynamics, shock waves, and gas discharges. From 2010 to 2017, he worked at Gazprom VNIIGAZ LLC, leading studies on multiphase flow in porous media, managing core‑analysis projects, and helping develop corporate reservoir‑research standards.

Since 2017, Dr. Orlov has been working at the Skoltech Center for Petroleum Science and Engineering, integrating AI, machine learning, and digital rock physics to optimize reservoir modeling, well treatments, and production forecasting. He develops and teaches graduate courses such as Digital Core Processing and Geostatistics and Reservoir Simulation, and directs the Petroleum Engineering Master’s Program.

He is also co‑founder and Deputy CEO of Digital Petroleum LLC, a Skoltech spin‑off commercializing AI‑based tools for field‑development optimization. Dr. Orlov has authored over 60 publications in leading international journals, holds several patents, and has supervised numerous MSc and PhD students now working in academia and industry.
