Newsletter, November 2013

Dear friends,

With the start of the academic year on September 2, 2013 – which is the first academic year at the Skolkovo Innovation Center – a new page has been opened in the history of Skoltech. The November issue of our Newsletter will tell you how the students and lecturers celebrated the new academic year.

The current issue also provides information about the Center for Advanced Structures, Processes and Engineered Materials, which is the second of the 15 Skoltech Centers for Research, Education and Innovation that will be created. The decision to establish this Center was adopted on June 3, 2013, at the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University.

Two students of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), with the support Skoltech, participated in the summer youth entrepreneurship program Global Founders’ Skills Accelerator, which was held at the MIT from June 17 to September 7, 2013. These students will share their impressions of their stay in Boston on the pages of our newsletter.

An innovation workshop was held at the MIT from August 6 to 28, 2013, which was designed specifically for master’s students of Skoltech. The main objective was to help the attendees develop confidence in their ability to create real innovations. A detailed account of the event is available below.

On October 12, 2013, we organized the “Innovative Subbotnik”, which included several vibrant events at once, the main one of which was the annual conference of students’ projects titled ‘Skoltech Innovations’, and the establishment of the Skoltech Library.

As of September 2013, Skoltech has begun conducting the Skoltech Colloquium, where leading scientists talk about their research work.

And, finally, from September 23 to 27, 2013, the Skoltech Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in cooperation with MIT Skoltech Initiative organized the Laboratory of Ideas. We searched for answers to the following question: how can a university or a government institution create and support technological innovations and entrepreneurship?

I wish you a pleasant reading!

Yours sincerely,

Edward Crawley
