Colloquium: Far-field Super-resolved Optical Microscopy – Progress, Prospects and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014

Fluorescent optical microscopy made it possible to study the interplay between molecules inside cells. This week, our colloquium focuses on this groundbreaking technology.

Fluorescent optical microscopy made it possible to study the interplay between molecules inside cells. This week, our colloquium focuses on this groundbreaking technology.

We are pleased to invite you to the Skoltech Colloquium. Our guest lecturer, Professor Yuri G. Vainer, of the Institute for Spectroscopy (Russian Academy of Sciences) will discuss current trends and advances in super-resolved fluorescence microscopy.

What: Far-field super-resolved optical microscopy: Progress, prospects and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry – 2014

When: April 16, 4 pm

Where:  Moscow School of Management, Beijing-2 Auditorium – China cluster

Abstract: Optical microscopy has become one of the most popular optical tools and is widely used in various fields both for research and practical purposes. The significance of the modern optical microscopy for practice and science was clearly demonstrated when in 2014 a trio of researches from USA and Germany was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy.”

Prof. Vainer will discuss the main principles of the super-resolved fluorescence microscopy and review such methods as Stimulated Emission Depletion Microscopy, Photoactivated Localization Microscopy and Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (STORM). Much attention will be devoted to considering new lines in the optical microscopy development, such as the Structured Illumination Microscopy, Light-Sheet Microscopy, and the Lattice-Light-Sheet Microscopy. The talk will also cover the last achievements in these fields, as well as the examples of new and interesting applications.

Guest speaker:  Professor Yuri G. Vainer, Head of the laboratory of electronic spectra of molecules of the Institute for Spectroscopy of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Education: Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (1972)

Permanent positions:

  • Head of the laboratory of electronic spectra of molecules of the Institute for Spectroscopy of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Professor, the deputy of head of the Nanooptics and spectroscopy chair, Department of Physics and Energetics of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (State university).

Main topics of research:

  • Single-molecule spectroscopy. Incoherent photon-echo.
  • Low temperature dynamics of disordered molecular solids.
  • Fluorescent spectroscopy and microscopy of complex molecular systems.

Awards:

Awarded by the prize in the name of D.S. Rozhdestvenskij of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (for series of researches: Single-molecule spectroscopy and local dynamics of amorphous media),  2004.
