Seminar abstract

Misconceptions of nature arise when careful measurements are not taken on single entities, where an entity can be a single small molecule, protein, DNA strand, nanoparticle, virus, or cancer cell. Experiments of this sort are very exciting. If the detection can be made specific, the ultimate sensitivity in chemical analysis is achieved. These methods also allow the study of chemical and physical properties of single entities, which may be drastically different from quantities attained using measurements over hundreds of thousands to billions of entities. The progress of electrochemistry in this field will be discussed, particularly the selective detection of single viruses in a biologically complex matrix as well as the study of single atom catalysts. The talk will end with a discussion of the presenter’s plans and vision for the future.

Jeffrey E. Dick earned a BS summa cum laude from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana in 2013. He has since been at the University of Texas at Austin studying chemistry with Prof. Allen J. Bard. His research interests include electrochemical energy storage, single molecule and nanoparticle chemistry, and the application of electrochemical techniques to complex biological systems.
