MAI to host Air Hackathon

In the lead-up to Cosmonautics Day, the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) will host the first inter-university Air Hackathon on April 6-8 to bring together the best software engineers, designers, mobile application and interface developers, marketing experts and analysts, and key players of the aviation sector – airlines, airports, system integrators, and IT companies.

The most gifted students from Russia’s top universities will vie for Air Hackathon’s coveted prizes and the opportunity to create an innovative digital product under the guidance of seasoned industry experts.

“Hackathons are an important element of an entrepreneurial ecosystem,” says Advisor to MAI President Dmitry Voloshin. “And universities are fertile ground for its development. Within the framework of MAI’s IT Center project, we have planned and successfully conducted a series of events encouraging the establishment of student startups in the field of IT. Last year, we created an accelerator for student teams jointly with the Internet Initiatives Development Fund (IIDF). We hope that regular Hackathons will generate a steady flow of projects that will evolve into lucrative businesses.”

Air Hackathon participants will have a unique opportunity to put forward an idea and develop a prototype solution in diverse areas, such as:

  • services based on open-access data from Rosaviatsiya (Federal Air Transport Agency);
  • services based on leading airlines’ ranking data;
  • in-flight entertainment recommender systems.

Air Hackathon prize-winners will gain experience in solving a real business case, get an opportunity to implement their project with the support of Rossiya Airlines and other Hackathon partners, a letter of recommendation for their IT project, addressed to NUMA Moscow International Accelerator, and a chance to learn from aviation and IT industry experts on site.

Hackathon partners – Indatalab, Alpina Publisher, Dream Aero and ivi online movie portal – will present the winning teams with awesome awards: a GPS-guided quadcopter, a flight on the Boeing 737 VR simulator, a collector model of a passenger aircraft, a flight on a fighter simulator, an e-book purchase certificate, an online movie subscription and so on.
