The Skoltech Space Center (SSC) recently organized and conducted a short-term expedition to Perm, Russia, at the beginning of September 2019. The scope of the expedition related to a remote sensing project called, “Forest Tree Species Classification Using Hyperspectral Imagery.” The aim was to gather new experimental data on the Perm forests, including in-situ (on-site) reference trees, airborne hyperspectral imagery, LiDAR point clouds, and high-resolution RGB photos. This new data should help to improve the quality of the algorithms developed in the early stages of the project.
This commercial project is a collaboration with the Space Technologies and Services Center, which is located in the city of Perm. It allows students to get involved in highly innovative research. Those involved included Associate Professor Anton Ivanov (Director of SSC) and Skoltech engineer Vasilii Mosin (SSC).
