Today, October 25, is Skoltech’s 8th birthday. When you think of a university, one tends to imagine old stone buildings that have stood for hundreds of years, such as Oxford or Harvard. Like ancient beings, the world’s oldest centers of thinking extend back multiple human lifetimes and represent humanity’s accumulated learning and constant movement towards answering questions to push our civilization forwards. The modern university is the offspring of such old traditions. If we were to compare university ages to human lifetimes, most of the world’s universities would be well into adulthood, and a great many more have long exceeded the natural lifespan of a person, without the drawbacks of senility. We can regard Skoltech as a boisterous child by comparison, but one that already shows promising signs of things to come. With that in mind, let us wish our young institute a very happy 8th birthday and much success for its future!
