A successful start: first STS Forum Russia-Japan workshop hosted by Skoltech

Skoltech hosted the first online Russia-Japan workshop under the aegis of Science and Technology in Society forum (STS forum). The workshop was organized under the MoU between the Skolkovo Foundation and the STS forum, which was signed during the annual meeting of the forum in October 2019 by the Chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation Arkady V. Dvorkovich and the Chairman of STS forum, Mr. Koji Omi.

The workshop was a success, even in the challenging online format. 215 participants gathered online to address the issue of how to deepen cooperation between Russia and Japan focusing on societal needs, especially to confront the unprecedented difficulties in the coming post-COVID-19 era.  Among them were distinguished speakers and guests, Russian and Japanese leaders in science and technology, including ministers and ambassadors, CEOs of major corporations, presidents of universities and institutes from both countries.

Despite the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to have the first workshop very successfully collaborating with the Russian counterparts. We hope to continue and develop this activity further to establish a valuable platform for active exchanges in the field of science, technology and innovation between Russia and Japan.

Alexey Ponomarev, Skoltech Senior Vice President for Industrial Cooperation

The STS forum Russia-Japan workshop is an essential element in the development of professional potential in the area of science and industrial technologies. The workshop is called to address not only practical tasks, but strategic and visionary issues related to the current trends in science and technology: to foresee and comprehend the upcoming technological streams. Without a doubt, the next workshop has great potential for the development of interdisciplinary discussion and attraction of expertise.

Due to the online format, the main challenge of the event was to preserve the key element of the STS forum — active networking between speakers and guests. For this specific purpose, Skoltech developed a special networking mobile application allowing to get in touch with any participant, chat and even make an online face-to-face meeting. To explore cultural and educating content, the attendees had an opportunity to enjoy a number of videos about Russian-Japanese cooperation, regions of the two countries, their cultural heritage, the Skolkovo Foundation and Skoltech. A special contribution was made by Skoltech professors who, specifically for this event, presented short pitches on how breakthrough technologies can foster the development of economy and society.

The mobile app is now available in the App Store and on Google Play and can be used for future Skoltech events.

Initially planned as an annual event, the STS forum Russia-Japan workshop is scheduled to be held in 2021 offline, at the Skoltech campus, with the date to be confirmed.
