MTS, Skoltech and the Skolkovo Foundation deploy a 5G pilot zone for the Moscow International Medical Cluster

Moscow, Russia – MTS (NYSE: MBT, MOEX: MTSS), a major Russian telecommunications provider, the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), a leading Russian private research university, and the Skolkovo Foundation have expanded 5G coverage at the Skolkovo Innovation Center by deploying a 5G pilot network for the Moscow International Medical Cluster (MIMC) that fosters research, education, medical treatment, and diagnosis for the Russian healthcare.

MTS, Skoltech and the Skolkovo Foundation launched a new step for Skoltech-MTS 5G Pilot Zone and extended a 4.9 GHz 5G pilot network for the MIMC’s extensive construction site. As the first step, the network will ensure 24-hour HD video surveillance of the MIMC facilities under construction and will then be supplemented with 5G indoor coverage to enable full-fledged provision of telemedicine services and solutions once the construction is complete.

In October 2020, MTS, Skoltech, and the Skolkovo Foundation launched a 5G pilot network at the Skolkovo Innovation Center in order to try out the 5G technology with an eye to designing advanced Russian 5G-based industrial ICT solutions and services.

“MTS builds on its collaborations with partners and Skolkovo residents to expand the 5G coverage at the Skolkovo Innovation Center and actively engages in high-potential projects that are expected to contribute to the advancement of science and industry in Russia in the coming years. Right now, MIMC is being connected to our MTS-Skoltech network. I am confident that the new 5G pilot zone will become a powerful platform for testing and implementing breakthrough technology at the crossroads of IT and medicine,” Dmitry Khalin, MTS Vice President for Cloud and Digital Solutions, says.

“Our pilot zone is steadily expanding, with more partners gaining access to the disruptive 5G technology. The Skolkovo ecosystem players show great interest in testing their new cases. MIMC’s 5G coverage will help test both medical and development scenarios in a real network. As 5G networks gain traction, they will become the go-to solution anywhere within the 5G coverage in Russia. This project is a unique experience for both Skoltech and our project partners,” says Dmitry Lakontsev, Head of the Skoltech-based NTI Center of Excellence (CoE) in Wireless Technology (WT) and the Internet of Things (IoT).

“A new testing ground for 5G pilot services, Skolkovo is deeply involved in the development of the cutting-edge technologies. Bringing Russian solutions and Skolkovo projects to the industry will be our next step. Importantly, Russian startups will be among the first to test their solutions in our 5G pilot network. And, of course, we will do our best to integrate Russian solutions in future 5G networks,” Arkady Dvorkovich, Chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation, notes.

“MIMC accommodates the world’s top clinics, making sure researchers and developers have everything they need to implement their projects and create unique technologies that would give fresh impetus to the development of medicine in Russia. A result of the collaborative effort of MTS, Skoltech and the Skolkovo Foundation, the new 5G network will make it much easier for MIMC to develop and implement new technologies,” Ildar Khairullin, CEO of the MIMC Foundation, comments.

“The MIMC project is unique in that it not only supports medicine but also enables testing and improving innovative construction technologies before they are integrated at Moscow construction sites. The MIMC 5G pilot network will enable faster and more efficient implementation of new ideas and technologies to enhance the quality and safety of construction operations,” Rafik Zagrutdinov, head of the Moscow Construction Department, says.
