Open Science: Skoltech to present “The Forefront of Physics” at non/fiction№22

On Saturday, March 27, the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) will present its new book, “The Forefront of Physics. A Collection of Interviews”, at the International Fair of Intellectual Literature non/fiction №22 at Gostiny Dvor in Moscow.

The speakers at the presentation will include Tatiana Podladchikova, an assistant professor at Skoltech, an expert in solar physics and space weather, and a winner of the International Alexander Chizhevsky Medal for Space Weather and Space Climate, and professor Yuri Kovalev, an astrophysicist, an Associate Member of RAS, and head of laboratories at LPI and MIPT.

The presentation will be followed by two popular-science lectures. Yuri Kovalev will talk about why the neutrino is the best “space explorer”, what it has to do with ice and water, and what secrets space supercolliders hold. Tatiana Podladchikova will explain how the Sun imparts its temper to our planet and what it is like for the Earth to be wrapped in the embrace of the Sun, what causes sunspots, solar flares, geomagnetic storms and auroras, where the solar wind goes, how dangerous clouds of solar plasma are, and what mysteries of solar physics may be solved in the 21st century.

The event will be concluded with a Q&A session. The author of the best question will be honored with a signed copy of the book.

The presentation will be held in Seminar Zone №2 at 1 p.m. Admission is free. The book will be available for sale at the Paulsen Publishers stand (B-23).

Background

“The Forefront of Physics” is an international science education media project that continues a series of collaborative initiatives of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), Ogonyok, and Troitsky Variant - Nauka that started with the award-winning 2016/2017 project, “Mathematical Walks”. A culmination of the project, the Russian-English book “Mathematical Walks. A Collection of Interviews” compiled in collaboration with the A.A. Kharkevich institute for Information Transmission Problems of RAS was honored with the 2017 Prosvetitel Award in the Neformat category.

The two books now form a two-volume edition under the shared title, “Mathematics and Physics: Two Perspectives, One World”, released by Paulsen Publishers.
