Skoltech becomes guest member of 3GPP — leading international telecommunication standards consortium

As of Sept. 27, Skoltech’s NTI Center of Excellence in Wireless Technology and the Internet of Things is a guest member of the 3GPP telecommunication standards consortium. The center was granted this status by the European Telecommunication Standards Institute, which is eligible to confer guest membership as a 3GPP organizational partner. As a developer of solutions for advanced mobile networks, Skoltech is strengthening its foothold on the global stage and reiterating its commitment to harmonizing open communication standards in use worldwide.

The new status entitles Skoltech to gain early access to newly standardized versions of mobile protocols and join global discussions on wireless technology applications. In addition, 3GPP guest membership is essential for patent clearance of Skoltech’s current and future research.

Skoltech is a proactive member of the O-RAN Alliance and the Telecom Infra Project (TIP), the key international organizations focusing on the development and promotion of OpenRAN standards. 3GPP membership highlights Skoltech’s industry-unifying and consolidating role in the development of Russian 5G network solutions. The Institute’s approach responds to the requirement for nationwide adoption of Russian OpenRAN standards fully harmonized with their internationally recognized version, which will help revitalize the national telecom industry and enhance Russia’s export potential.

Dmitry Lakontsev, who heads the Skoltech-based NTI Center of Excellence in Wireless Technology and the Internet of Things, commented: “Our telecom sector has to start virtually from scratch, and the only way to catch up with the global leaders and close the gap between the telecom goliaths and small developers is to rely on international standards and global consortia.

“This is what drives us to pursue multiple goals simultaneously: building on our partnership with the 3GPP consortium to ensure 100% compatibility with a growing pool of 5G devices and take care of the patent clearance issue; collaborating with the O-RAN Alliance and TIP to draw upon the open architecture and the growing ecosystem of solutions; and actualizing Russian OpenRAN standards to consolidate the efforts of Russian industry players.”
