Skoltech is an international graduate research-focused university that was founded by the group of world-renowned scientists in 2011. Skoltech's curriculum focuses on technology and innovation, offering Master's programs in 11 technological disciplines. Students receive rigorous theoretical and practical training, design their own research projects, participate in internships and gain entrepreneurial skills in English. The faculty is comprised of current researchers with international accreditation and achievements.

VR Concept tests VR conferencing software at Skoltech’s 5G Laboratory

In VR Concept’s tests that have successfully completed at Skoltech, the team conducted a joint VR meeting while simultaneously communicating with interactive industrial 3D models using two PCs with VR headsets connected to the Internet via Skoltech’s 5G pilot network.

During the tests, VR Concept’s client/server software solution and Skoltech’s fast 5G network enabled easy and seamless handling of an accurate 3D model of industrial hardware within the same virtual environment, while the 5G mobile network provided fast and lag-free data transfer via PCs to VR headsets.

The new solution will enable employees at factories, offices and remote locations to join interactive VR meetings and review life-size digital hardware models.

Since PCs strongly limit the mobility of the overall solution, VR Concept plans on gradually switching to a cloud solution with VR/AR devices communicating in the 5G network on their own or via a smartphone without requiring a PC connection. The new solution will rely on the 5G network to stream video from a cloud-based graphics server to the VR headsets’ 4K/8K screens, like it is done in cloud gaming.

Dmitry Lakontsev, head of the Skoltech-based NTI Center of Excellence (CoE): “VR/AR is one of the key enablers for unlocking the potential of 5G. We are happy to have VR Concept as our partner in testing Russian VR solutions. VR conferencing facilitates both human communications and remote interactions with industrial equipment. As wireless technology gains traction, VR communications may someday become a common tool like Zoom or Skype.”

Ilya Viger, Deputy CEO of VR Concept: “We thank Skoltech’s 5G Laboratory for the opportunity to test the functionality of our VR conferencing software in its 5G network. Interactive VR meetings with access to digital 3D models of future industrial products or construction projects are becoming increasingly popular, and we are aware of the impressive potential of 5G for massive adoption of this new way of remote communication.”

Skoltech 5G Laboratory

Established by the Skoltech-based NTI CoE, Skoltech’s 5G Laboratory makes part of a unique 5G pilot zone that uses Russian 5G hardware only. Testing advanced Russian solutions and services in collaboration with Skolkovo residents and Skoltech’s industrial partners is among the key goals of the new 5G pilot zone.
