Skoltech shows off 1 Gbps bit rates and other 5G hits at SPIGF 2021

On October 5-8, the Skoltech-based NTI Center of Excellence (CoE) took part in the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum (SPIGF 2021), where Skoltech and Mikran presented a corporate 5G network solution at the Import Substitution stand. The CoE team developed the network’s core and base station, while Mikran, an industrial partner of Skoltech, created a prototype of a Russian radio module for the 5G base station. The Russian mining industries have a strong interest in advanced telecommunication technologies as a way to enhance operating efficiency and labor safety.

Mikran and Skoltech deployed a private standalone network with a 5G base station at its core at Gazprom’s Import Substitution stand and demonstrated its operation using commercial 5G smartphones that displayed stable bit rates of about 1 Gbps.

The 5G solution that was showcased to Skoltech’s guests at the time of the meeting of the Skoltech Board of Trustees on September 20, 2021, has now been displayed for the SPIGF’s audience to watch it operate flawlessly.

The strong interest in private 5G networks on the part of oil and gas companies was among the key considerations for choosing SPIGF 2021 to demonstrate Skoltech’s groundbreaking solutions. A private telecom infrastructure makes digitization easier for a company, while helping it quickly automate its key business processes.

A private autonomous 5G network is another step forward in CoE’s program that aims to make the Russian 5G base station ready for mass production by the end of 2022.

Dmitry Lakontsev, Head of the NTI CoE: “Wireless communications are the lifeblood of the economy. We regard SPIGF 2021 as a perfect opportunity for presenting private 5G networks, since implementing specialized telecom solutions at large enterprises constitutes a current global trend and a driver for efficiency growth for industries, transport, and many other sectors. Factories and mines, warehouses and quarries, airports and oil platforms, ports and emergency services are seeking to adopt fast and reliable mobile 5G solutions. In the short term, Russian 5G products will shape the critical telecom infrastructure of the major Russian operators and enterprises, so this is the right time for us to present a real private 5G network with software developed by our teams and show how it works.”
