After being featured for the first time among the world’s top 100 universities aged 50 or under in the previous edition of the Nature Index Young Universities rankings, Skoltech has climbed 32 positions in this year’s installment, placing at No. 65 overall — as well as debuting at No. 35 for physical sciences. The Institute’s fast advance in the league table is also reflected by its being named the ranking’s 21st most rapidly rising university.
Nature Index 2021 Young Universities is the latest edition of the biennial global rankings of universities founded no earlier than 50 years ago and featured in the Nature Index. The league table scores institutions based on their research performance using a primary metric called the article share: For every research paper in one of the 82 recognized journals, each co-author contributes points to the overall score of the universities they are affiliated with, assuming equal author contributions and equal degrees of affiliation. To make sense of this, consider a hypothetical article co-authored by two scientists, each of them affiliated with two institutions. A quarter of the article will be counted toward the final scores of each of the four universities. This is the main score that, in the case of Skoltech, secured its ultimate position No. 65
The Nature Index of young universities also provides subrankings by subject for physical sciences, chemistry, life sciences, and Earth and environmental sciences. These are limited to 50 institutions, except for the latter category, which lists just 25 schools. This year is the first time that Skoltech has made it into the physical sciences subranking, placing 35th.
Besides the primary league table, which this year featured 150 institutions, and the four by-subject subrankings, Nature Index 2021 Young Universities also lists the top 25 rising young universities based on the magnitude of positive change in their primary scores between 2019 and 2020. Skoltech is among them.
