Skoltech is an international graduate research-focused university that was founded by the group of world-renowned scientists in 2011. Skoltech's curriculum focuses on technology and innovation, offering Master's programs in 11 technological disciplines. Students receive rigorous theoretical and practical training, design their own research projects, participate in internships and gain entrepreneurial skills in English. The faculty is comprised of current researchers with international accreditation and achievements.

Hi, Tech: “Challenge accepted: AI in oil & gas” (RU, Msc 16:00)

Depleted conventional deposits can hardly meet the growing global demand for oil and gas, most of which are “difficult” reserves located at great depths under high pressures and temperatures and having poor transport properties. “Difficult” oil and gas can only be extracted using unconventional technologies, opening up plenty of exciting opportunities for research.

How is the oil and gas industry coping with new challenges? Can AI help make field selection less risky? What technologies are already available in Russia as regards big data, computer vision and deep learning?

Join us to discuss these issues and related topics with Skoltech professors. Alexey Cheremisin will explain the role of mathematical modeling and digital core technologies for the oil and gas sector, and Denis Orlov will talk about the connection between AI and the petroleum industry.

We will also present Skoltech’s MSc and PhD programs, admission and selection procedures, learning process, and opportunities for recent graduates.

Join the lecture to find out:

  • whether oil and gas fields can help generate hydrogen,
  • how scientists can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
  • how to reduce one of the key risks − uncertainty in interpreting geological information – using AI,
  • what commercially viable technologies lie at the core of the software developed by Digital Petroleum, a technology startup created jointly with Skoltech,
  • what educational programs teach all this at Skoltech and how to enroll in a tuition-free program.

About the speakers

Alexey Cheremisin, a Skoltech professor and deputy director of the Center for Petroleum Science and Engineering (CPSE) graduated from the Physics Department of the Novosibirsk State University. Prior to joining Skoltech, Alexey worked at Schlumberger’s R&D department where he developed new hydraulic fracturing technologies. For three years, he directed a Russian manufacturer of cutting-edge equipment for specialized core research where he launched a new line of products and services, increasing the company’s sales several times over. At Skoltech, Alexey is in charge of experimental research and an MSc program at CPSE.

Denis Orlov, a research scientist at CPSE, earned his Ph.D. degree in Physics and Mathematics from Lomonosov Moscow State University. Denis has been doing basic and applied research in hydrodynamics and continuum mechanics for over 15 years. Prior to joining Skoltech, he worked as researcher, head of sector and head of laboratory at the Gazprom VNIIGAZ research center where he studied multiphase filtration in complex porous media. At Skoltech, Denis is focusing on the optimization of hydrocarbon recovery and development of oil and gas fields using AI technologies, such as Digital Rock Physics.
