Skoltech is an international graduate research-focused university that was founded by the group of world-renowned scientists in 2011. Skoltech's curriculum focuses on technology and innovation, offering Master's programs in 11 technological disciplines. Students receive rigorous theoretical and practical training, design their own research projects, participate in internships and gain entrepreneurial skills in English. The faculty is comprised of current researchers with international accreditation and achievements.

Skoltech team is six-times champion of EUROBOT Russian round

Skoltech’s ReSET team won the Russian round of the international student robotics contest, EUROBOT Open 2022 hosted in Korolev, for the sixth time in a row and qualified for the finals in France this May.

This year, ReSET team led by Skoltech professor Dzmitry Tsetserukou included Skoltech MSc students Artem Nenashev (team lead), Kuzma Fedorovich, Denis Davletshin, Sausar Karaf, Maxim Katerishich, Yana Zhura, Darush Zhanibek, Alexander Kashirin and Timur Bayburi, and PhD student Alexey Shcherbak.

The national round of EUROBOT 2022 was themed around imaginary archeological robots that explored the ruins of an ancient robotic civilization. According to the script, the autonomous robots engaged in a 100-second pair battle to locate the excavation site, identify, collect, sort and deliver the artefacts to the exhibition gallery and return to base. Since localization and navigation are the biggest challenges for robots, each participating robot got penalty points for a collision with the opponent’s robot. Up to four robots from both sides participated in the match. The team that scored the most points was named winner at the end of the battle.

About 30 teams from universities and robotics schools took part in the Russian round, and only 10  reached the national finals in Korolev, where ReSET beat the leading national teams from Bauman MSTU, MISIS, Innopolis, and MPEI.

“Thanks to the smart robot motion strategy, we beat the strong united team, AllDragons & #Cten, in the finals. Skoltech first-year MSc students designed and prototyped robots literally from scratch, and created a control system, sophisticated electronics, and a complex LIDAR-based navigation system. Importantly, participation in EUROBOT was a first for nearly all of our students who have come a long way to become the best engineers in Russia as regards robotics and autonomous robots. Skoltech’s ReSET team is an exemplar of professionalism for the younger generation. EvoCargo, Russia’s leader in unmanned cargo vehicles, owes much of its technology excellence to the graduates of the Skoltech Robotics Laboratory who have been through several EUROBOT contests,” says the team’s mentor, Skoltech professor Dzmitry Tsetserukou. “They are currently employed by leading companies, such as Intel Rus, Aramco Innovation Rus, Huawei Rus, and Sber. Some are doing postgraduate students at top universities, including ETH Zurich (Switzerland), UC Irvine (USA), HKUST (Hong Kong), SDU (Denmark), IIT (Italy), University of Franche-Comté (France), Skoltech (Russia), and HSE (Russia). Marko Simić (Serbia), Russian champion of Eurobot 2016 and member of the winning ReSET team, is CTO of Ascent Robotics, one of the most successful AI startups in Japan.

EUROBOT is an open international contest of mobile robots created by youth teams from across the world. Founded in 1998 as a competition for youth robotic teams in France, EUROBOT has evolved into a truly international event open to young people from all over the world. Today, the EUROBOT community groups over 450 teams from 30 countries in Europe, Asia, Americas, and Africa, which compete in two leagues: EUROBOT Open, the highest league for participants aged from 18 to 30 years who develop fully autonomous mobile robots, and EUROBOT Junior for younger talents aged from 7 to 18 years who create remotely controlled robots. Skoltech’s ReSET team was vice world champion in France in 2019.
