On July 6, Skoltech PhD graduate Aleksandra Burashnikova successfully passed a joint PhD thesis defense with and was awarded PhD degrees both from Skoltech and the Grenoble Alpes University. The joint defense took place at Skoltech and was held in a blended (online and offline) format.
Skoltech supports agreements for joint supervision as one of the forms of international collaboration. Aleksandra became the seventh Skoltech PhD student defending a doctoral thesis within joint procedure with an international university.
Aleksandra conducted her research on the large-scale sequential learning for recommender and engineering systems under the supervision of professors Yury Maximov and Massih-Reza Amini. The honorary PhD defense jury was jointly appointed by two universities. The members of the Jury represented universities in Russia and in France: Skoltech, MIPT, Grenoble Alpes University, Pierre and Marie Curie University.
“I completed my master’s program in Grenoble, where Professor Massih-Reza Amini was my supervisor. I really enjoyed working with Professor Amini. My master’s thesis theme was so inspiring I decided to try my best at the PhD program. Professors Massih-Reza Amini and Yury Maximov offered to continue working within the joint program, and I said yes! To be honest, I doubted whether I should go for a PhD. But considering the unstable times we’re living now, it’s better to take a chance and try rather than not to try and regret after. I am happy that I tried and had the opportunity to learn from two amazing experts in their fields at once, ” says newly minted PhD Aleksandra Burashnikova.
