Professor Gentzbittel joins expert council on carbon balance control under Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education

Skoltech Agro Director Laurent Gentzbittel has joined the Expert Council on the Scientific Support for the Development of Carbon Balance Control Technologies under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia. Chaired by Minister Valery Falkov, the council features high-profile specialists from research institutes in the areas of climate, oceanology, forestry, and crop sciences, as well as representatives of the ministry, the State Duma, and business.

The council works within the framework of the Carbon Supersites project in close coordination with the Expert Center for Scientific and Methodological Support of the Creation and Operation of Carbon Supersites in Russia, which was established in 2021 and is based at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Carbon supersites are test sites for the experimental measurement of emission and absorption of greenhouse gases: methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide. There, technologies for controlling the carbon balance in Russian ecosystems are tested in the field, and the effectiveness of various measures for reducing the carbon footprint is assessed.

The test sites are established on the basis of partnerships between universities and research centers. So far, 14 carbon supersites with a total area of more than 39,000 hectares have been created in Russia. The largest is the Eurasian Carbon Supersite in Bashkortostan, which reproduces the natural ecosystems of the feather grass steppe, fallow land, forest, and swamp and occupies 11,600 hectares. The most compact test site corresponds to the forest ecosystem with a natural water reservoir and lies in Krasnodar, on 26 hectares of land.

The territory of Russia has an immense potential for carbon absorption, which gives the country an opportunity to become a leader in the international carbon trade, which will involve the exchange of carbon credits. These are a kind of “currency” tied to the volume of greenhouse gases absorbed from the atmosphere that will help states transition to a low-carbon economy.
