Superpowers of nature translated into technology
Only the most resilient, the fastest and the clingiest have survived through millions of years of the evolutionary race: mosquitoes with their ultra-sensitive blood sensors, frogs with their saliva 50 times stickier than modern polymers, and geckos with their incredibly prehensile paws ‒ superabilities that even Marvel and DC would envy!
Borrowing technology from nature is not uncommon: looking at spiders, scientists invented hydraulic pumps, armor and telephoto lenses. The study of lizards prompted the idea of adhesive tape and the cockroach exoskeleton evolved into a robot capable of squeezing into the tiniest of openings. Ilya Gomyranov of Skoltech will talk about the miraculous abilities of animals and the modern-day technologies inspired by the wild world.
Ilya Gomyranov is a zoologist and an employee of the Skoltech Center for Open Learning

#CNBR_Open Seminar
Here is the next seminar #CNBR_Open of the Center for Neurobiology and Brain Restoration of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology!
This time the invited speaker is Dr. Ryan Cabeen (University of South California, Keck School of Medicine), who will talk about brain mapping, reconstructing a connectome using diffusion MRI as well as new approaches to analyzing the micro- and macro-structures of the brain’s pathways using software that was developed at the Institute of Informatics and Neuroimaging.
Recently, the Institute’s team’s work has been featured on the director’s personal blog of the US National Institute of Health (NIH).
The seminar will be of interest primarily to researchers involved in neuroimaging and MRI data analysis and students of the faculty of neuroscience, but #CNBR_Open welcomes everyone who is interested!
