The shale revolution: from science and technology to economics

“Only a country possessing oil extraction technologies for difficult-to-extract crude reserves can be called an oil power today,” says the Mikhail Spasennykh, Director of the Skoltech Center of Hydrocarbon Recovery.

Few traditional oil reserves remain and in order to meet the growing demand from industry, world oil and gas companies need to spend tens of billions on searching for new sources of hydrocarbons. This means shale oil, which is located in rocks with low permeability. Domestic oil giants are not lagging behind their colleagues, and the largest reserves of shale hydrocarbons are located in western Siberia, where active exploration is being conducted and new extraction technologies are being tested.

Mikhail Spasennykh will discuss the fast-changing landscape within the sector, the scientific developments at Skoltech, and the economic and technological aspects of the “shale revolution.”
