The 5th Winter School-Conference “String Theory, Integrable Models and Representation Theory” kicked off at Skoltech on January 20. Organized by the Skoltech Center for Advanced Studies (CAS), the Higher School of Economics (Department of Mathematics), the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics of RAS, the Independent University of Moscow and the Interdisciplinary Scientific Center Poncelet, the Winter School started off with lectures and seminars at Skoltech on January 20-21 and continued at the partner sites on January 22-25. The event is attended by over 100 university students from across Russia.
Skoltech is proud to welcome a stellar cast of speakers to this annual event, featuring lectures by world-renowned scholars, Nikolay Reshetikhin (“Limit shapes in statistical mechanics”) and Alexander Zamolodchikov (“Solvable UV deformations of 2D quantum field theories”), which took place on Monday. A seminar followed Zamolodchikov’s lecture as well as an afternoon lecture by Leonid Rybnikov (“Gaudin Model and Crystals”) on Tuesday.
“We are very pleased that the Winter School, which is being held for the fifth time, is attracting an increasing number of participants each year. It is good to hear that the students of the previous Schools are successfully pursuing their Master’s and PhD studies, many enrolled at Skoltech, published excellent works and got their degrees. For the first time, the School is held at the new Skoltech campus with its spacious conference room well suited for such events,” says one of the School organizers, Skoltech Associate Professor, Mikhail Bershtein.
The Winter school is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the frontier research in mathematical physics and share views with colleagues from other universities. Leonid Rybnikov, Associate Professor at the HSE Department of Mathematics, points out the significance of the event: “The School is a brilliant idea, as it brings together dozens of students with a passion for science. It is clear that the event is both exciting and useful.”
Over recent years, Skoltech has hosted schools in mathematical physics twice a year – a school in Russian during the winter and an international school in English during the summer. Applications for the summer school will be accepted till February 15.
