Skoltech is an international graduate research-focused university that was founded by the group of world-renowned scientists in 2011. Skoltech's curriculum focuses on technology and innovation, offering Master's programs in 11 technological disciplines. Students receive rigorous theoretical and practical training, design their own research projects, participate in internships and gain entrepreneurial skills in English. The faculty is comprised of current researchers with international accreditation and achievements.

Skoltech PhD student and research scientist receive the Ilya Segalovich Award

Alexander Korotin, Skoltech PhD student in Computer Science, and CDISE research scientist Alexey Artemov have been chosen as the recipients of the Ilya Segalovich Award, a prize that Yandex awards annually for outstanding achievements in computer science. Korotin receives the prize for the second time.

The Ilya Segalovich Award is a scholarship established by Yandex to reward academic achievement and encourage scientific advancement in machine learning, computer vision, information search and data analysis, natural language processing and machine translation, speech synthesis and speech recognition. This scholarship is awarded to graduate and postgraduate students or academic advisors delivering cutting-edge research across state-funded academic institutions in Russia, Belarus or Kazakhstan.

Alexander Korotin studies online machine learning, generative models and aggregation algorithms. Alexey Artemov is interested in computer vision, including 3D, and neural networks.

“For me, this award means that my research in machine learning has been recognized by the biggest Russian player in AI, Yandex. This encourages me to keep working in this direction and achieving new results,” Korotin said.

“The award came along as a surprise, and I see in it not just a recognition of my achievements, but a momentum to keep working. I could not have arrived at my results without the favorable conditions and a fertile ground for competitive research created at Skoltech, and for that I am grateful to Professors Evgeny Burnaev and Denis Zorin as well as my entire team – I think of this award as our collective achievement,” Artemov said.

He added that, across the world, data science is a young field, and the Russian science and engineering community has a lot of work to do to advance it in Russia. “It is worth mentioning the unprecedented efforts by Yandex to foster and develop computer science in Russia and support researchers and students in all sorts of fields. I am especially happy to see the interest in applying machine learning to computer graphics, digital geometry processing, and 3D computer vision – the fields we are working in,” Artemov noted.

According to press reports, this year all recipients of the Award will get 1 million rubles. Students and PhD students will also get an all expenses paid trip to a computer science conference of their choice as well as a research grant to use Yandex services for their studies.
