About 10,000 years ago, humans learned to grow plants, and not just gather them. Agriculture has come a long way since then: people have learned to grow various plant species, created new technology and developed a great number of crop varieties.

There were three agricultural revolutions that changed history. Is another one coming? These days, classical methods are giving way to new technologies, such as genomic editing and selection, that help breed highly productive plant varieties and even modify their properties. How will agriculture change and what will we be eating in the coming years? What will be the role of research labs and startups in this?

Rim Gubaev is a plant geneticist, a PhD student at the Skoltech Digital Agriculture Laboratory, and co-founder of the OilGene startup specializing in genomic selectionof oilseeds.
