What is climate and how is it different from temperature and weather? How is the greenhouse effect related to temperature on Earth and other planets?

Climate research has a longer history than science, so why do people still argue about climate change? The Earth had been in existence long before it became populated by humans and climate might have started changing before we showed up.

At the lecture, you will dive deep into the inner parts of the Earth to find out what happened hundreds of thousands of years ago and visit permafrost regions in Siberia where life and organic matter locked in near-anabiosis under a thick layer of ice is ready to break free. We will make a paleoreconstruction of past events and look into the future to figure out what is happening on our planet and who will win or lose from climate change.

About the speaker

Alexander Zherebker, Ph.D. in Chemistry, is a senior research scientist at the Skoltech Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry Molecular Technologies in Medicine and Environmental Research. Over the past 3 years, he has been developing molecular methods of biogeochemistry for organic carbon evolution research. Prior to joining Skoltech, Alexander worked as a visiting researcher in several laboratories in the United States and Germany. He is a winner of the Malcolm Prize from the International Humic Substances Society, a winner of the Moscow Government Award for Young Scientists, and an author of over 50 papers.
