Skoltech at NSU: silicon photonics and new technologies in oil and gas

At the lecture, Skoltech professor Vladimir Drachev will talk about silicon nanophotonics and plasmonics and present some of the projects performed at the Skoltech Center for Engineering Physics.

Nikita Artemov, an expert at the Skoltech Center for Petroleum Science and Engineering, will explain how digital core modeling and microfluidics research help study the processes occurring in the reservoir.

Join the lecture to learn more about:

  • applications of nanophotonics and plasmonics;
  • development cycle of photonic integrated circuits in a laboratory;
  • predicting optical and electrical characteristics of integrated devices using 3D modeling;
  • enhanced oil recovery methods that help maintain economically viable production;
  • amount of extractable hydrocarbons in a reservoir and the most efficient production techniques;

About the speakers

Vladimir Drachev, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, full professor and director of the Skoltech Center for Engineering Physics, is one of the world’s top experts in plasmonic nanostructures and metamaterials for biomedicine and nanophotonics. After graduating from Novosibirsk State University, Vladimir received his Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Semiconductor Physics and the Institute of Automation and Electrometry of the Siberian Branch of RAS and earned his Doctor’s degree from the Higher School of Economics (HSE). Prior to joining Skoltech, he worked at the New Mexico State University, Purdue University (Indiana), and the University of North Texas (USA). Vladimir Drachev has published upwards of 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals, with a total of over 7,140 citations in Scopus. He has five patents in protein identification using plasmonic biosensors.

Nikita Artemov, an expert at the Skoltech Center for Petroleum Science and Engineering, graduated from the Department of Oil and Gas Geology and Geophysics at the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas. His research interests span applied tasks in the field of advanced rock research methods, as well as the modeling and selection of technology solutions for enhanced oil recovery. Prior to joining Skoltech, Nikita directed the oil and gas division at a Russian provider of high-tech laboratory services and founded the first Digital Core laboratory in Russia. At Skoltech, he focuses on the Digital Core research thrust by developing new approaches to the study of hard-to-recover hydrocarbon reserves, modeling complex multicomponent hydrodynamic systems and building new interdisciplinary teams. Nikita is a member of the Russian Society of Subsoil Experts.
