Artificial Intelligence: here comes smart farming
People first domesticated plants over 10,000 years ago, marking the first agricultural revolution followed later by another five. Right now we are witnessing a new breakthrough, brought about by artificial intelligence (AI).
Along with largely enhancing the product quality, AI makes agriculture more efficient. Advanced technology providing early detection of plant pests and diseases is already mature enough for farmers to cut down on pesticides and, therefore, save costs and cultivate eco-friendly products.
Using computers and sensors in crop farming no longer appears as a sci fi idea. What is AI? Where and how is it used in agriculture? Where can you find simple tools capable of saving your entire garden or farm?

World Space Week at Skoltech: an overview
Skoltech is hosting a number of events during the World Space Week, an annual international event from October 4 to October 10, 2020. This year’s theme is, “Satellites Improve Life”, and Skoltech has a lot to offer: here’s a guide to various events organized during the week by the Skoltech Space Center.
October 7, 16.00-18.00: Skoltech Space Center weekly seminar, setting the stage for IAC 2020 (in English). Register at https://forms.gle/fpXq5Wv7i488oPeZA
October 7 18:00: Skoltech online conference SATELLITES IMPROVE LIFE: HOW EXACTLY (in English)
The conference is aimed at uniting the professional community in satellite and digital technologies and particularly those who start their careers in this field or are interested in it. We will talk about the ways in which applied cosmonautics is developing today in Russia and beyond and discuss how exactly satellites are improving our life right now. Guest speakers include Skoltech alumni and industry professionals representing a wide range of career trajectories and choices in the space industry.

Lecture by Anton Ivanov “Space revolutionaries. How small satellites have changed exploration of space”
The ‘Arche’ Center and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) present on October 8, 2020 at 19:00 a lecture by Anton Ivanov “Space revolutionaries. How small satellites have changed exploration of space”
The lecture will be held at: Moscow, metro station “Paveletskaya”, Dubininskaya, d. 20, bld. 1 (popular science library “Nauchka”)
Today, more than 16 thousand satellites are orbiting our planet, and about a thousand of them are small spacecraft, or CubeSats. Since the beginning of the 21st century, CubeSats have taken over large and expensive vehicles, and they have revolutionized the field of Earth remote sensing. Nowadays, commercial companies that started from “garage” offer images of the Earth that are updated daily.
The miniaturization of electronics technology has spawned more than 20 startups in the field of M2M mobile communication for the Internet of Things, and small devices make it possible to compete with industry leaders while being attractive to investors. For what purposes do CubeSats plow the vastness of the universe? Why has their number increased dramatically in the last decade? What startups are operating in space? How is artificial intelligence used on board spacecraft, and how are swarm structures used to explore the solar system?
Three fascinating stories about how small satellites revolutionized the use of space from the director of the Skoltech Space Center, Anton Ivanov, in a lecture on October 8.
Anton Ivanov is a graduate of MEPhI, Director of the Skoltech Space Center, Professor. In 2000 he received his PhD in planetary science from the California Institute of Technology. He worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA JPL), where he participated in the Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey, Mars Express and Mars Science Laboratory.
He was engaged in research at the Space Center of the Swiss Higher Polytechnic School in Lausanne (EPFL). Professor Ivanov participated in the CubETH and Astrocast projects, led the draft design for the CHEOPS satellite. The center, headed by Anton Ivanov at Skoltech, is engaged in the strategic development of next-generation space systems.

Skoltech Lecture Hub at polit.ru: “Space weather: embraced by the Sun”
With the invention of the telescope, one of civilization’s greatest instruments, in the early 17th century, Galileo Galilei discovered sunspots. In the 21st century, people are already sending man-made spacecraft to the Sun. What is it like for the Earth to be wrapped in the embrace of the Sun which may impart its temper to our planet? Where does the solar wind go and what causes geomagnetic storms and Aurora Borealis? How can one predict extreme space weather events that directly affect the health of astronauts and the functioning of technical facilities in space and on Earth? Join the lecture to find out what surprises solar processes have in store and how space weather forecasts can influence our earthly plans.
