SKOLTECH TO RIDE THE BLACK SWAN: webinar by Skoltech Prof. Dmitry Kulish

Dear Skoltechians, it is truly important that we all keep honest responsible quarantine during the next 1-2 weeks. However, it is also important the we keep ourselves busy and balanced in the proper healthy way. On Wednesday April 01 at 4pm Professor Dmitry Kulish will run a dedicated webinar called RIDING THE BLACK SWAN. Dmitry will give his vision on current situation and will tell us how to fish yourself out of confusion and embed yourself in meaningful activities that serve your own goals, but also unite you with society.

Our colleagues and friends from BGU (the Israeli engineering powerhouse) invite us to the innovation competition “IMPACT IN POST-CORONA WORLD” (https://www.thechallengecompetition.com/current-challenge). It may be the most wonderful cross-cultural experience with acute global unity context. At 4:30 our dear IW mentor Yossi Shavit from BGU will tell us about the competition and we will decide together how to follow-up.

Wandering through the maze of the human brain. An online lecture by Skoltech professor Philipp Khaitovich (in Russian)

Staying at home is an excellent opportunity to strengthen your health and broaden your horizons. Philipp Khaitovich will tell you everything you might want to know about the human brain.

Learning about the human brain is both fascinating and confusing. The most complex biological mechanism taking up an amazing amount of energy, the human brain fully controls all our vital functions thanks to the harmonious operation of its multiple structures, including tens of billions of neurons that act as “conductors” and “processors”, and plenty of other unique cells.

What is the brain made of? Why is there so much fat? Are there any proteins or carbohydrates in the brain? Can the substances it contains help distinguish between a healthy and sick brain, or a human and animal brain?

Philipp Khaitovich is an evolutionary biologist and professor at the Center for Neurobiology and Brain Restoration at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) in Moscow since 2014. He graduated from the Department of Biology at Lomonosov Moscow State University and earned his PhD degree in biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Philipp worked as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany and the Shanghai Research Institute for Computational Biology in China.

Skoltech and Skolkovo International Gymnasium will be hosting several online lectures on biology (in Russian)

Skoltech and Skolkovo International Gymnasium will be hosting several online lectures on biology.

On March 27th at 4 pm Moscow time Skoltech biologist Evgeniya Lazareva will lead a fascinating lecture about today’s reality, called “Viruses: Life of the Non-living”.

COVID-19 has changed our lives. Listeners will learn about viruses, how they affect our bodies and what information they carry. At the same time, one cannot call a virus “alive”, because it cannot exist outside of an organism. It carries information like a flash drive. So, are all viruses bad or are there any good ones?

After the lecture, listeners will be able to ask questions and arm themselves with knowledge about today’s most talked-about viruses. The lecture is open to everyone, but registration is required. Tune in here: https://events.webinar.ru/13328871/3624574

Training: How to use patent data to understand trends in technology, plan research projects and develop innovation strategy

Dear all,

We are happy to invite you to the training: How to use patent data to understand trends in technology, plan research projects and develop innovation strategy.

When: Monday 17 February, 14:00 to 15:00 Room: E-R3-C2-2008

When: Tuesday 18 February, 14:00 to 15:00 Room: E-B2-3005

In order to register please send a request on the following email:

Is your research really as unique as you think?

How can you use patent data to help plan your research projects, win grants and support innovation?

How can you quickly map technological trends and opportunities related to your research?

How can you obtain comprehensive information about patents worldwide in your field?

How can you identify previously unknown research groups worldwide, in industry and universities, who do R&D in your field?

Skoltech has subscribed to a powerful yet easy-to-use patent database and analytics platform — “Cipher” — that is available to everybody at Skoltech to help answer these questions.

Cipher is an online product, harnessing artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze patent portfolios internationally. In comparison to conventional approaches, Cipher is a fast and cost-effective method that allows you to gain an in-depth analytical understanding of patent ownership, competitive landscaping, and technology landscaping. Cipher can help you to quickly identify who is doing research and technical work in your field of interest, identify where they are located worldwide, know with whom they collaborate, identify which centers are either growing or declining, and understand who owns the results, to mention just some of the applications.

The training session will introduce how to use Cipher as a tool in research and innovation projects at Skoltech. This will be a hands-on training session, so please bring your laptop with you.
