The T-shirt that will let you feel the field got first prize for Skoltech students

June 14, 2018, the opening match of the 2018 Football world cup. You sit at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, wearing a t-shirt with the Russian flag on it, and you loudly support your national team. 20 minutes into the game and it’s a goal for Russia! You can feel the excitement in your heart, but also in your body. Your shirt is vibrating and the Russian flag on it is replaced with the word “GOAL!” in flashing colors.  Does this sound like a dream to you? In less than two years, this may be a reality that will change the way sports fans show their support.

Skoltech students won the first prize in a fashion hackathon that was held last month. The students, Pavel Sukhov, Oleg Shipitko, and Marko Simic, all from Skoltech’s Robotics lab, featured a very unique t-shirt for sports fans.

Their project, named “Feel the Field” uses wearable tech to take the football spectator experience to a whole different level. Their t-shirts have an embedded LED display, which is connected to ios/android application, through which, the user can choose what image to display – his team’s logo, mascot, a written message etc. “Feel the Field” also enables multi-user collaborations. Fans wearing these shirts can create an interactive display that is shown on them.

The Fashion Hackathon consisted of two tracks: Fashion Wearable and E-commerce. Skoltech’s team “Refuge” got the first prize in the Fashion Wearable track, as well as one more nomination called Promising Market.

The success in the fashion hackathon was the icing on the cake for our students. Just a little bit before that, team Refuge gave there a more serious pitch-session in front of leaders of industry at the Agency for Strategic Initiatives. In this event they also got one of the two winning nominations.

“While it is impossible to estimate the technological level and the prospects of commands, since the teams had too little time, there was an exception: team Refuge. They did a very good and cool work in just two weeks! Their idea is good and they have an understanding of who they sell to. The fact that in such a short time they managed to produce a prototype worth showing, is an indicator for a good team.” Complimented Alexander Gorny, the CIO of Mail.ru, who was one of the experts participating in the event.

Professor Dzmitry Tsetserukou, head of Skoltech’s Robotics Lab, commented about his students’ achievement: “The “Feel the Field” project is just fascinating and impressing. Not only that I like the idea, but I really want to wear it. Conceptually, I see two catchy features that people will enjoy: The first one is that the group of hundreds of standing fans, let us call it pixel, can produce huge crowd image of e.g. flag of the team, face of the player, animated text. Deep psychological connections between the members of the fan club can be built using the device. The second one is the touch feedback that fully immerse the spectacular to the play and gives emotionally charged connection with the game. With the touch sensation on the chest user can experience the ball motion on the field, goal event, and human wave direction. This is the part of the Affective Haptics technology that was proposed by me in 2009. It aims to control and send the emotions to the humans through the tactile channel. In the case of “Feel the Field”, the user can experience the charged emotions of the game!”

8th STRIP Conference proves growth in Skoltech’s innovation activities

img_9122One of Skoltech’s stated goals is to create an environment of innovation and to interface with science, industrial commercialization and venture opportunities. One of the main tools to achieve this goal is the STRIP program, which held its eighth conference on November 15-16.

The Skoltech Translational Research and Innovation program bridges the gap between laboratory and marketplace, with the aim of driving innovation and entrepreneurship in Russia. It provides support for teams, assists the establishment of proof of concept and commercialization, including pre-start up identification of high potential market opportunities, intellectual property management, and, if appropriate, team development.

The first day of the conference was dedicated to the presentations of the 2015-2016 winning projects. Teams’ representatives demonstrated the result they achieved in the past year. The second day was all about the next year. 16 groups of students, researchers and professors presented their projects in-person to the reviewing panel, hoping to be selected to the program.

img_9142The presentations were held in three rounds, each of them dedicated to a different area: IT and robotics; energy, new materials and nano devices; biotech and advanced solutions including wearables. The audience was very much involved, and active debates rose after each presentation. The discussions revolved mostly around questions such as technical feasibility and potential for commercial success. One of the most active participants in the debates was Skoltech President Alexander P. Kuleshov.  The event was supported by invited experts from Skolkovo foundation including Nikolay Suetin, Albert Efimov, Evgeny Sheyenko, Ilia Goldt and external guests from top research and educational institutes of Moscow and Moscow region.

Dmitry Pebalk, manager of the Program, expressed his gratitude to all the participants and guests of the event. From his words, Skoltech community is showing an increasing interest to innovation activities and the number of applications has grown by 30% as compared with the previous year. Moreover, several projects raised from student-driven initiatives and now are ready for serious challenge within the STRIP selection process. Dmitry also mentioned the big potential of collaboration with Skolkovo foundation and already realized the idea to attract mentors from its community who should bring their experience to Skoltech projects and help with further commercialization.

Skoltech robotics team developed new interface for interaction between man and drone

LightAir-05-300x177Skoltech scientists led by Skoltech professor, head of Robotics Lab in Skoltech Space Center Dzmitry Tsetserukou have developed new interface for interaction between man and drone. Their project is called LightAir – a new system of Tangible Communication with drone quadcopter by feet gestures. The key feature is projecting a touchpad on any arbitrary surface and thereby make it interactive.

Scientists demonstrated their technology on a quadcopter that takes off, then hovers at a certain point, and projects the interface on the floor. A person can interact with the quadcopter by clicking on the elements of the interface with taps and swipes familiar to smartphone users.

Mikhail Matrosov, one of the developers, speaks about the applications of this technology: “After cargo delivery by drone, you have to confirm it by a sign. You can do it by smartphone but it seems more logic to do it directly in the drone interface. But in this case drone needs to land and it can be dangerous for both drone and human. It is easier to steal it from the ground than from the air. With our technology you can sign it directly on the ground by foot. Another application – in the airport: for example, you try to find your gate. You can ask the security, usually it works, but some airports are extremely huge. For example, London Heathrow is so big, so it has its own train inside. Orientation inside is very difficult. A drone can help you. With our technology you can ask a drone to conduct you to the gate and he will fly ahead of you, projecting an arrow pointing the way and all other useful information.

LightAir is a revolutionary project – a radically new concept of interaction between man and a drone. Until now, the only way of interaction was broadcasting commands by radio using a controller. The Skoltech team developed a new interactive way to interact with a visual channel and 3D-sensors that scan the space in front drone and recognize human gestures. To apply a command, one should only “click” with his foot on the image projected by the drone on any solid surface, whether horizontal or vertical.

Results of this research are published ACM Digital Library. LightAir team was awarded with the prestigious Laval Virtual Award at the most important global forum of computer technologies – SIGGRAPH 2016 (Los-Angeles) and was invited to participate in the Laval Virtual forum next year. This forum, which is annually held in France, is the largest European forum of computer graphics and interactive technologies.

Skoltech’s Eurobot team reached top-16 in the final

After winning the Russian national title, participating the international final in Paris and reaching the top-16 stage, Skoltech’s Eurobot team – reSET – lost to the Swiss team A.R.E.S at the 1/8 final. “This final loss was like a win”, said reSET’s team leader, head of Skoltech’s robotics lab, Prof. Dzmitry Tsetserukou.

This year the Eurobot’s competition theme was “The Beach bots”. The participating robots had to complete theme related tasks – fishing, build sandcastles, and collect shells – within 90 seconds and earn as many points as possible. The finals took place in Paris, France. Among the participants there were teams from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, the UK, Germany, Poland, Spain, Canada, Tunisia and of course the Russian federation. Each country could send more than one team.

On the first day of the competition, reSET got a nice 105-71 win over team TURAG from Germany on the second round. On the third round reSET lost to the Swiss team RCR 65-61, and got the 14th general place.

On the first round of the second day reSET lost to the French team ESEO – Angres 65 – 61, but had a wonderful 157-109 the next match, over the Swiss (again) team RI7. After the preliminary stages it turned out that the Skoltech team is between the top 16, which according to prof. Tsetserukou “It is the first time when new team comes to this stage”.

13410613_1212694872076463_2020777236_oAt the 1/8 final reSET met yet another Swiss team, this time it was team A.R.E.S, but lost 89-111. Prof. Tsetserukou describes what happened in the match: “The Swiss team blocked our robot, but our robot overpassed it with clever strategy. Unfortunately it could not bring sand-cubes to the designated area, but all the audience applauded us. We had a very clever robot and the most advanced”.

Oleg Shipitko stated on behalf of the reSET team: “We are quite happy, but we know that we could do better. We were quite unlucky on our way because in the randomly assigned pairs in qualification phase we didn’t have any easy opponents. Nevertheless we managed to get to the final and made our opponents very nervous there. We learned so many lessons about this competition and we will be much better prepared next year.
Also, we enjoyed sharing experience with other teams. It was a real pleasure for us that many teams with big experience were shocked by the level of technologies we used in our robots. In addition, we received many questions about Skoltech and how to apply to it. So, we expect to see familiar faces among next year’s students.
So, we are happy about the result but we are going to make it better.”

The final rank of reSET team was 13. We applaud the team, who is still the Russian champion, for the work they did and for their achievements. We also want to thank the team’s co-organizers – Skolkovo RoboCenter – and our sponsors: Phoenix ContactMaxon motorRock flow dynamics and Aviton. We are looking forward to see next year’s Eurobot team at Skoltech. The theme is already known – Moon village.
